There are many things you can do to make a difference and you don't have to travel to safe our corals and ocean life, just simply make a change in your daily life.

TO REDUCE POLLUTION
There are three great ways that you can help the environment everyday. We produce garbage and waste everyday when we buy things. Nowadays, almost everything we buy produces garbage. Sometimes, we buy products that are wrapped in plastic and placed in boxes. Then, we are given a plastic shopping bag to put our purchases in. All around the world, people are producing more and more waste, and cities are running out of places to put all that garbage. We see garbage in the streets and sidewalks of our towns and outside fast food restaurants. Most garbage is eventually sent out of town to landfills, where chemicals and toxins build up and spread out into our environment.

The most important of these three Rs is the first one: REDUCE the amount of garbage you produce. Reduce means to make something less or smaller. You can REDUCE your garbage by buying less stuff! This is the easiest way to make less garbage and protect the environment. Many people in the world buy too much stuff. Try to buy only things that you really need, and make sure you use your products wisely. Shopping should never be a hobby or leisure activity. Shopping should be something that you do when you need to.

This can also save you lots of money!

Here are some other ways to REDUCE the garbage and waste in your life:

  • Plastic bags: bring bags with you when you go shopping. That way, you can say no thank you when shopkeepers offer you a plastic bag.
  • Packaging: look for products that use less packaging. Some items are wrapped in too much plastic and cardboard, which makes too much garbage.
  • Recyclable:look for things that are recyclable, so that when you are finished with something, you know it can be recycled and won't end up in the landfill.
  • Avoid disposable products: these are products like paper towels, paper cloths, throw-away mop, plastic cups etc. If you can only use it once, then it won't help you REDUCE your garbage.
  • Avoid fast food restaurants and bring your own containers when going to pick up food for take-away orders.

It is also important to REDUCE the amount of pollution and harmful chemicals we create by purchasing certain products:

Reduce Your Chemicals - avoid products like fertilizers for your garden that contain toxic chemicals. Look for labels that say environmentally friendly or biodegradable. This will ensure that what you buy won't harm the environment. Buy green Household Items avoid shampoos, soaps, cleaners and detergents that can be damaging to the environment. Again, look for labels that say biodegradable or environmentally friendly? The second most important of the three Rs is REUSE. This means that it is best to use things again and again, instead of buying new stuff. Many people are using reusable water bottles and coffee mugs to take to school and work instead of throwing paper cups and plastic bottles into the garbage everyday. This is a great example of how reusing products over and over again can help us reduce the amount of garbage we make. Here are some other ideas of how you can REUSE things in your everyday life to protect our world:

  • Plastic forks, knives and spoons from fast food restaurants can be cleaned and kept
  • Jars from sauces, peanut butter, and jellies can be reused again and again
  • Plastic shopping bags can be reused in the home or taken back to the stores
  • Paper has two sides - use both!

The last R is for RECYCLING, which means using the old materials from waste to make new stuff. Once we have tried to REDUCE our garbage, and we have REUSED old items as much as possible, we may eventually have to get rid of some stuff. This is our opportunity to RECYCLE.

Most cities and towns have recycling centres. Nowadays, people recycle many different things, including paper, glass, plastic, aluminium cans, tin, batteries, and even motor oil for cars. Your job is to find out what kinds of things can be recycled in your town, and make sure not to throw those things in the garbage. Collect recyclable containers and waste, and make sure it goes to the RECYCLING centre, instead of the garbage. Don't throw away anything that can be recycled!

If you can remember the 3 Rs you will be helping the natural world, including the forests and oceans of our planet. Do your part: REDUCE - REUSE RECYCLE!

TO SAVE OCEAN WILDLIFE
The oceans are getting empty and more and more species become endangered due to human consumption and activities. Fish stocks are depleting, scientists are very worried about species as codfish and tuna. Several organisations in the world have created a sustainable fish menu that points out which fish to avoid in which part of the world.

  • Check out which fish you can eat and which you should avoid: CLICK HERE
  • Don't eat sharkfin soup, 80 million sharks are getting killed each year, most of them just for their fins
  • Look for fish products with a green label, dolphin friendly tuna or MSC label
  • Don't buy or eat fish that is alive, because the way they catch live fish (usage of cyanide) can be very destructive for the ocean habitat
  • Don't eat tigerprawns, because they are caught in a very destructive way for the ocean floor (trawlers), eat happyshrimp (Dutch consumers) prawns instead, CLICK HERE.

TO REDUCE CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate Change is one of the biggest threaths to the global reef. Warmer waters and heavier storms will destructs the fragile reefs. Climate Change happens because we release greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere through human activities and this makes the earth warmer and therefor climate is changing. There are many different greenhouse gases that are released by humans into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide mainly comes from the burning of fossil fuels, such as gas, oil, and coal. When we drive our cars or ride the bus, the vehicles that we use are releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which contributes to the overall greenhouse effect, making us a little bit warmer. Electricity is also sometimes created by burning fossil fuels, so when we watch tv or use a toaster, we may be contributing to the release of greenhouse gases.

  • REDUCE YOUR ENERGY USAGE: walk and cycle more instead of using the car, switch your normal lightbulbs to energy saving lightbulbs (just remember that energy saving lightbulbs should be discarded as chemical waste), use timers to disconnect your appliances automatically f.e. at night (printers, computers etc), close doors to keep the heat in the room, use insulation.
  • SWITCH OVER TO GREEN ENERGY, make use of energy that comes from sustainable resources like the wind and the sun.
  • PLANT TREES: trees absorb CO2, a greenhouse gas.

TAKE CARE OF WATER Fresh, clean water is not a neverending resource therefor we need to take care of water before we run out of it.

The best way that we can help the world's water problems is by taking responsibility for our own water usage at home. As you know, there are many appliances and faucets that transport water throughout your home. Showers, toilets, sinks, clothes washers, dishwashers, and garden hoses all use water. The pipes that bring water to all these facilities in your home are complicated, and they can sometimes leak. Fixing these leaks can not only help with the world's water problems, but it can also save you and your family lots of money!
