Another problem that has grabbed our attention are the millions of sharks that are killed for the sharkfin soup industry. Sharkfin soup was in the old days a special soup that was served at wedding banquets in the villages near the ocean. Nowadays because we have refridgerators, improved transportation and Asians have more income to spend on these luxury items, sharkfinsoup is served anywhere in Asia.

This has a huge effect on the shark population. Already species as the great white, the whaleshark and basking shark are on the Red List as being an endangered species.

Sammy the Shark, our mascot has visited primary schools in China and asked the children to start protecting sharks. As a result more than 1,000 children submitted to us their coloured shark and we exhibited these in Shanghai Ocean Aquarium. The volunteers from EF School have decorated the backgrounds for the exhibition. To view the sharks, click here.

Sammy the shark has also walked the Health Race in Shanghai. Together with 8 volunteers we ran part of the marathon and handed out 1,000 flyers about protecting sharks.
